ONRC to host talk on AI, weather predictions

The Olympic Natural Resources Center (ONRC) will host the next installment of its Rosmond Evening Talk Series on Friday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. The event will occur both in-person at the Hemlock Forest Room, 1455 S. Forks Ave. and virtually via Zoom at https://washington.zoom.us/j/3834334539.

The evening’s presentation, titled “The Industry of Weather Prediction: How Will AI Change It,” will be led by Tom Rosmond, a distinguished meteorologist with decades of experience in atmospheric sciences.

This talk marks the 11th anniversary of Tom Rosmond’s original ONRC presentation on weather prediction. While revisiting some key scientific principles and technological advancements from his earlier lecture, Rosmond will focus on two significant themes: the weather prediction industry as a global model of cooperation and the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in weather forecasting.

Rosmond will explore how international collaboration in weather prediction operates successfully and why it remains a vital example of effective global teamwork.

AI is set to revolutionize the weather prediction industry by acting not merely as a tool but as an independent problem-solver. Rosmond will discuss how AI’s unique capabilities differ from past technological advancements and the profound impact it could have on meteorology and the accuracy of the weather information we rely on daily.

About Rosmond

A 1962 graduate of Forks High School, Rosmond earned his PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington in 1972. He dedicated 30 years as a research meteorologist with the Naval Research Laboratory’s Marine Meteorology Division in Monterey, California, followed by an additional decade as a contractor for the same organization. In 2004, he received the Fred E. Saalfeld Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Science for his contributions to the Naval Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System.

Rosmond currently resides in Forks, serving as the board president of the Forks Timber Museum and as a fire commissioner for Clallam County Fire District 6.

The Rosmond Evening Talk Series is made possible through the support of the Rosmond Family Education Fund.
