Petty Officer Second Class Deven Blair, a devoted member of the United States Coast Guard, finds himself away from the cozy comforts of his Forks, Washington home this holiday season. Currently stationed at Coast Guard Station Neah Bay, positioned at the Western-most tip of Washington state, Blair, alongside his colleagues, is braving isolation and weather challenges to safeguard the local community and maritime environment.

Blair, who fell in love with the close-knit community of Forks while welcoming his first son into the world, shares a special bond with the place he now calls home. Despite the unique beauty of Neah Bay, the isolated station poses distinct challenges, especially during the festive season. In recognition of their sacrifice, the Coast Guard’s public affairs team is extending a special tribute to the dedicated members standing watch at Neah Bay during the holidays.

Constructed in 1971 within the Makah Indian Reservation, Coast Guard Station Neah Bay serves a critical role in maritime safety. Housing two 47-foot motor lifeboats and a 29-foot utility boat, the station responds to approximately 100 search and rescue cases annually, predominantly involving sports-fishermen and tourists navigating the hazardous coastline. The station also plays a vital role during the Makah tribe’s seasonal gray whale hunt, ensuring public safety and enforcing maritime law in the area with nearly 200 safety boardings conducted each year.

Petty Officer Blair, reflecting on his service and the holiday season, sends heartfelt wishes to his in-laws, saying, “My wish to my in-laws back home, I wish y’all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. I hope to see you all soon.” Despite the physical distance, Blair remains connected to his roots, cherishing the community that shaped his love for service.

Offering advice to winter boaters, Blair emphasizes the importance of regular equipment checks: “I hope boaters this winter will get their lifesaving equipment checked regularly so it works when they need it.” His commitment to maritime safety extends beyond duty, embodying the Coast Guard’s mission to protect and serve.

Blair’s journey in the Coast Guard began at the age of 18, driven by his passion for the ocean and the desire for a purposeful life. Reflecting on his sources of inspiration, he notes, “My biggest inspiration is my son Dax. Every day and every action from the day he was born is for setting him up for the best life I can give him.” It’s this dedication to family, community, and service that defines Petty Officer Deven Blair’s unwavering commitment to the Coast Guard and the safety of those he protects.
