The Quillayute Valley School District held its regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m. in the Forks High School library. The Quillayute Valley School District Board of Directors is made up of the following members: Bill Rohde (Chairman), Ron Hurn (Vice Chairman), Mike Reaves (WIAA Representative), Val James Giles (Legislative Representative), and Kevin Hinchen.
For the 2018-19 school year, the Board of Directors has set four performance goals:
Performance Goal #1:
The Quillayute Valley School District Board of Directors with the superintendent will regularly review and monitor student achievement with the expectation that progress will be made by every student.
Performance Goal #2:
The Quillayute Valley School District Board of Directors with the superintendent will strengthen its partnership with the local community and represent the values and expectations they hold for their schools
Performance Goal #3:
The Quillayute Valley School District Board of Directors with the superintendent will complete and adopt a Long-Range Facility Plan a (20-year plan).
Performance Goal #4:
The Quillayute Valley School District Board of Directors with the superintendent will monitor the implementation of technology to ensure the highest level of utilization occurs by every student to ensure college and career readiness.
The QVSD Board of Directors wishes to send you an invitation to join them at their next regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Forks Elementary School, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The highlight of the meeting will focus on the School Improvement process and students successes of Forks Elementary School.
Some of the highlights of the Sept.11 meeting include:
• Approval of consent agenda items.
• Review of the 2017-18 Summer School program in Quillayute Valley School District, including its online program, Insight School of Washington.
• Review and discussion of Timber Revenue over the past decade and a half.
• Discussion of school board members attending the Annual Washington State School Directors Association Conference in Spokane, Washington on Nov. 14-17.
• Annual report per Board Policy No. 3205 of Sexual Harassment Prohibited.
• Annual report per Board Policy No. 3247 of Isolation and Restraint and Other Uses of Reasonable Force.
New business covered in the meeting were as follows:
• Revision of Board Policy 4130 “Title I Parent Involvement.”
• Approval of the Basic Education Requirement Compliance report.
• Review and approval of Insight School of Washington 2018/19 Student Handbook and Operations and Policy Manual.
Board member reports included:
• Discussion about recruiting a student representative from Forks High School to sit on the QVSD Board.
• Request to review the District’s sex education curriculum.
The QVSD Board of Directors welcomes the public to come and join our meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. in the Forks High School library. The Tuesday, Sept. 25 meeting location will be at Forks Elementary School and the Tuesday, Nov. 27 meeting location will be at Forks Intermediate School.

Other QVSD District news:
• The District will be hosting an ALICE “Train the Trainers” model for district leaders and area emergency response personnel on Wednesday, Sept. 26 and Thursday, Sept. 27 in the Forks High School library. Alice stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. This is a course which prepares individuals and organizations to be prepared for the response to an active shooter. This two-day course is designed to provide the background and research behind the optional response strategies. On Wednesday, Sept. 26, Forks High School students will be released at 12 noon for a half day so that participants in the training can utilize classroom spaces for hands-on drills. ONLY Forks High School students in Grades 9-12 will be released at noon. If your high school student needs bus transportation on this day, contact your bus driver or the transportation department at 360-374-6262, ext. 151 or 153. All other grade levels will be released at the usual Early Release time at 2:15 p.m.
