Dale Raben was given the Pioneer Logger Award for his impact on the storied West End timber industry during Hickory Shirt/Heritage Days.

Raben has been clearing timber since 1947, when he started working to make room for the Bonneville Power Administration’s power lines over the Cascade Mountains with a double-bit axe.

After working construction jobs and joining the Air Force, Raben returned to the forests and started logging on the peninsula when he began cutting the road to Hurricane Ridge.

After that, he got a job in Forks and moved his wife, Pat, and their three children, Leslie, Julie and Mark, from Monroe.

Later, he began to mill shake and shingles, eventually building DR Cedar into a firm that employed 15 people.

He sold the mill in 2002.
