Brenda Calmo-Ordonez and Karma Lapin pose with Scott Seaman. Both girls are in the eighth grade and neither one had a bike. The bike that was auctioned off for $275 at the QVSA was donated by Forks Outfitters.
For the past two years, the Clallam Count Literacy Council has donated a box full of new books for the junior high students to potentially win. For the month of March, when the students finished a book, they put their name in a drawing to win a book. Additionally, there was a $20 Forks Outfitters gift card grand prize.
On April 1, during lunch, names were drawn. Irene Perez was the grand prize winner of the $20 gift card and a book. The following students won a book to take home and a book to donate to their block class library: Haley Barker, Derrick Beebe, Damon Davila, Tyler Ellis, Lucy Franklin, Reese Gomez-Bos, Chloe Leverington, Luis Perez and Micah Truong. Congratulations to these students!

For a number of years former teacher Scott Seaman purchased a bike at the Scholarship Auction for a reading contest at the school library. Seaman decided he wanted to do that again this year. When a bike came up at the auction this year he got outbid by Kathy Rosmond. When Rosmond heard of Seaman’s intentions, from junior high teacher Sarah Decker, she donated the bike back to the reading program and Seaman purchased another bike as well.
So in the end two bikes were awarded. One to Brenda Calmo-Ordonez for her book report on “To Kill a Mockingbird” and to Karma Lapin for her report on “And the Mountains Echoed.”
Forks Junior High would like to thank Kathy Rosmond, Scott Seaman, Diane Edwards and the Clallam County Literacy Council for their role in encouraging students to read.
