Rock slide keeps US 101 closed at Lake Crescent

LAKE CRESCENT – US 101 in Clallam County remains closed at Lake Crescent following a rock slide yesterday morning at an Olympic National Park rock scaling construction site.  Today, WSDOT and federal geotechnical engineers are examining the slide site to determine its level of stability.  Once they deem the hillside stable, the Park’s contractor will remove fallen debris and patch areas of road damaged by the falling rocks.

When that work is complete, crews will reopen the road to one lane of traffic and continue with the construction project.  In the meantime, motorists traveling north on US 101 from Forks may travel as far as the Lake Crescent Lodge, where they will be turned around.  Motorists traveling along US 101 from Port Angeles may travel to Elwah.  Travelers wishing to drive the entire distance of US 101 are detoured around the closure via State Routes 112 and 113.
