The $330,000 rebuild of one-third of a mile of Spartan Avenue has been delayed until next spring, city officials said this week.

The rebuild was expected to begin earlier this month, but Mayor Bryon Monohon said the city’s file was misplaced in the state Department of Transporation offices, sidetracking it.

Most of the project, about $276,000, is funded with federal street dollars, which are administered through the state. The rest of the funding comes from a $44,000 state Transportation Improvement Board grant and $10,000 of city funds.

Monohon said the paperwork will be properly filed over the winter with the funding being ready for construction in the spring.

Exeltech of Lacey was awarded the contract to engineer the rebuild.

When complete, it will put a new road surface with wheelchair-accessible ramps on Spartan Avenue between Calaway Way and E Street. The slope of the road also will be lessened, which is intended to reduce future damage.

Monohon said the city will fill in patches of the road this fall that were torn up to access underground utilities for the construction project.
