The North Olympic Library System summer reading program ran from June 20-Aug. 20. Each year the Summer Reading Program provides an array of educational, cultural and incentive-based programs that encourage all ages to read during the summer months. Research shows that children who do not read during the summer lose up to a month of instructional knowledge they learned the previous year — what is known as the “summer slide.” Library summer reading programs have been shown to help alleviate the “summer slide” by providing access to materials and enrichment activities and encouraging children to read.
