Taking shelter from the storm

High tides and high winds lash La Push

La Push experienced the powerful forces of nature on Saturday as an 11-foot high tide, paired with strong Pacific winds, sent water surging beyond its usual boundaries. At First Beach, waves breached the banks, flooding the scenic viewing area and crashing over the jetty along the Quillayute River.

The rising waters also caused disruptions on La Push’s Main Street, with the Quillayute River spilling over at the U.S. Coast Guard facility. Authorities temporarily closed the road at midday as high tide peaked.

La Push residents and visitors were reminded of the immense power of the ocean, even as the community weathered the storm.
