Olympic National Park rangers located and secured the body of an unidentified person along a remote section of the park’s wilderness coastline yesterday afternoon. The decedent has not been identified; positive identification will be determined through a coroner’s examination.

Visitors reported the unidentified decedent late Tuesday. Rangers arrived on scene Wednesday morning and were able to recover and safeguard the body.

Weather and ocean conditions continue to prevent removal of the person from the beach, but with better weather predicted on Friday morning, rangers will attempt to transport the decedent to the Clallam County coroner at that time. The area’s remote location and extremely rugged terrain necessitate transport by either helicopter or boat.

Clifford Dopps, 74 years old, was lost in a boating accident north of La Push, Washington on August 18. His boat was later found on a remote and rocky section of shoreline in Olympic National Park. A life jacket and other items were found nearby, but Dopps’ body was not found during an intensive two-day search.

The identity of the decedent located yesterday remains unknown.
