Unsafe passing causes Saturday accident

According to a Washington State Patrol press memo, three vehicles were involved in a crash on Saturday afternoon at about 2 p.m. near milepost 218 Hwy 101.

The memo describes the incident as one of unsafe passing. A vehicle, a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer, driven by Jeremy S. Payne age 43 of La Push, and a vehicle, a 2012 Toyota Sienna, driven by Carolyn S. Wilcox age 48 of Port Angeles were both traveling east on Hwy 101 at MP 218.

Another vehicle, a 2016 Kia Rio, was traveling westbound and was driven by Liliana Romero Castro, age 49, also in the Kia was 37-year-old Luis F. Rios, both from Toms River, New Jersey. The memo states that the Payne vehicle passed the Wilcox vehicle and hit the Romero Castro vehicle head-on. All three vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane.

Also traveling in the Payne vehicle was 16-year-old Shawnta Payne, injured and transported to Harborview, and Delphina D. Williams age 50, injured and transported to Forks Hospital, both of La Push. The memo says Payne was injured but not transported. Castro and Rios were injured and transported by aid to Forks Community Hospital.

The Wilcox vehicle was struck by debris from the collision. Passengers in that vehicle were Amanda E. Malone age 40, and Jeffrey M. Malone age 42, both of Cypress TX. The three were not injured.

The report states all involved were wearing seatbelts.

The memo further states that the Payne vehicle and Romero Castro vehicle were totaled and removed by Evergreen PTA. The Sienna had reportable damage; Payne was charged with Negligent Driving 2nd-degree.
