Two new faces have likely won seats in local governments.

Retired educator Juanita Weissenfels has won the Forks City Council  seat being vacated by Councilman Gus Wallerstedt in a non-partisan race.

Port of Port Angeles Commissioner Jim McEntire, a  Republican, has won his Clallam County-wide race against Linda Barnfarther, a Democrat. McEntire will represent Sequim as one of three Clallam County Commissioners, though elected by voters across the county.

In the much-publicized Clallam County-wide Commissioner District No. 1 race Republican Jim McEntire held his lead against his Democrat opponent Linda Barnfather by about four percentage points from the first ballot count released on Election Day, Nov. 8.

The Clallam County Auditor’s Office, Elections Division, released final vote counts on Monday, Nov. 14, with the exception of 60 or so mail ballots. The elections office reported that 26,803 ballots have been counted county-wide, for a 58.61 percent voter turnout.

Across the county McEntire has 13,228 votes or 52.08 percent of the vote, with Barnfather receiving 12,169 votes for 47.92 percent of the vote.

West End voters played a key role in electing McEntire. In the Beaver Precinct McEntire received 188 votes to Barnfather’s 56. Bogachiel Precinct voters gave the Republican 81 votes to Barnfather’s 54. Barnfather did defeat McEntire in Clallam Bay, 67-59. Quileute Precinct voters supported McEntire 83 to 67, and in Sappho Precinct 68 to 40. In the five Forks precincts, McEntire received 355 votes to Barnfather’s 224.

In the Forks City Council Position No. 1 race Weissenfels won with 372 votes (64.47 percent of vote) against Giancarlo Buonpane who received 205 votes. Incumbent Councilman Kevin Hinchens ran unopposed for Position No. 4, as did incumbent Councilman Mike Breidenbach, who will continue to be the Position No. 5 councilman.

Quillayute Valley School District Board Member Dave Dickson retains his District No. 1 seat, running unopposed, as did District No. 3 Board Member Bill Rhode, and District No. 5 Boardmember Starla Daman.

West End voters joined voters statewide in passing Initiative Measure 1183, which ends the practice of selling liquor at state stores, a program begun in the Prohibition Days. Countywide the initiative won with almost 60 percent of votes in the “yes” column. The vote tally so far in the five Forks precincts is running 336 for, 284 against.

The certification date for the election is Tuesday, Nov. 29.
