“Growing Vegetables and Fruits in
Containers” by Judy English and Jeanette Stehr-Green,Thursday, May 27
Gardeners with limited space, pest management issues, poor soil conditions or those with mobility concerns, in need of easy access to plants for their care and harvest will want to join Veteran Master Gardeners Judy English and Jeanette Stehr-Green to learn about the practical solution of growing vegetables and fruits in containers.
Container gardening is not difficult but has a few additional challenges that are not a consideration for growing plants in the ground. During their hour-long class, English and Stehr-Green will discuss the benefits of growing vegetables and fruits in containers and provide tips on how to be successful. They will inform participants on specific varieties of vegetables and fruits that are particularly well-suited for container gardening and discuss the appropriate container for the desired crop. Watering and fertilizing practices will be conveyed as well as necessary steps to take to overwinter perennial plants such as berries, fruit trees, and woody herbs growing in containers.
Join this Zoom presentation on Thursday, May 27 from noon to 1 p.m. by going to https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/ and selecting the Master Gardener Zoom Presentation Link or, by calling 253-215-8782. The Meeting ID is 963 1338 3659 and Passcode, 695871
Judy English and Jeanette Stehr-Green have been WSU-certified Clallam County Master Gardeners since 2005 and 2003, respectively. They met through Master Gardeners and have enjoyed collaborating on many, many projects over the years.
Both English and Stehr-Green love teaching others about gardening. They regularly contribute to the Master Gardener column “Get It Growing” in the Sequim Gazette and participate in “Garden Talk” a monthly, hour-long, live gardening program on KONP Radio with host/moderator Todd Ortloff.
English was awarded the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners in 2014. Her gardening interests include experimentation with plant varieties, garden-to-table vegetable gardening, accent planting for interest, and raised bed versus in-ground planting of vegetables.
Stehr-Green was awarded the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners in 2010. She was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year. Her gardening interests include growing berries in the home garden, container gardening, houseplants, and control of vertebrate pests.
The “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series is sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners. Live streaming presentations are available from noon to 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October. These lectures provide home gardeners with education on research-based sustainable garden practices in Clallam County. For questions, call 360-565-2679.
Self-guided Tours Continue at Port
Angeles Garden Site through May 21, 2021
WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners are offering a self-guided tour at the Fifth Street Community Garden in Port Angeles to teach gardeners about vegetable gardening on the North Olympic Peninsula. This opportunity is offered in lieu of an in-person event, due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns.
This two-week self-guided tour which began Saturday, May 8, will be available through Friday, May 21, at 328 E. Fifth Street. Ten new focus sites will be identified and flagged for two weeks.
Each site will mark what is happening (or should be happening) in area vegetable gardens in May and cover topics such as dealing with an early spring pest, the pea leaf weevil, and protecting your growing fruits and vegetables with vertical gardening constructions.
All sites will highlight:
• Which vegetables grow well in this climate.
• What needs to be done in the vegetable garden.
• What control measures exist for common pests and diseases.
Visitors are invited to pick up a tour sheet at the flag marked #1 and follow the tour to the other stations to test their gardening knowledge.
Because the garden is ever-changing, it is possible that identified problems will be resolved before the tour is taken.
COVID-19 protocols, including social distancing and wearing masks, are encouraged while visiting the garden.
For more information call 360-565-2679.
