Christian Olsen, Chris … nickname … Oly …was born in Merlin, Oregon in 1942 to Vic (Viggo) and Helen Olsen. His day of seeing his maker and going to Heaven was January 22, 2021. He was living back in Salmon, Idaho after leaving the McKenzie River area two years ago. He fell asleep and was very comfortable.
The boating world lost a true legend last week with the passing of Chris. A well-known boatman and guide, Chris lived his passion, introducing people to his favorite rivers and fisheries. He likely had more river miles and more sweep boat miles than anyone before or after him.
Chris worked for all four generations of the Helfrich Family over the years and poured his heart and soul into his work. Chris spent his time on many different rivers, focusing much of his time on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho, the Rogue River and McKenzie River in Oregon, and many rivers near Forks, Washington as well. Known for his work ethic and attention to detail, Chris will forever be loved and remembered as a treasured part of the Pacific Northwest guiding communities.
He is survived by his daughter Kristy Garoutte, son Christian M. Olsen and brother Victor L. Olsen.
