Gary Lee Lesure, affectionately known as “Biff” and celebrated as the unofficial mayor of Sappho, passed away on September 15, 2024, in Sequim, Washington. He was 74 years old.
Born on June 28, 1950, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Gary was the son of Herbert and Alice (Gilbertson) Lesure. He grew up on the family homestead along the Sol Duc River and attended schools in Beaver and Forks, graduating with the Forks High School class of 1968.
Biff’s life revolved around his roots on the Olympic Peninsula. About 30 years ago, he opened an antique/second-hand/junk shop along Highway 101 in Sappho, next to his home. The shop, a thrifter’s paradise, was known for its eclectic treasures, Biff’s legendary banter and his “half-price sales” that could strike at any moment—even mid-shopping.
A beloved local character, Biff’s warmth and humor made him a community fixture, and his presence brought life to the community of Sappho.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Jackson, who resides in Montana.
Biff’s life and legacy will long be remembered by those who visited his shop and shared stories along Highway 101.
