The Neah Bay Eagles claimed the title as the second best 8-man football team in the country after a season which saw them claim the Northwest 8-Man League championship.

The Eagles fell 24-50 to the Las Vegas Cobras in the national 8-man football title game at Freedom Park Football Field in Las Vegas, Nev., on Aug. 10.

The Bay Eagles, a semipro team, took its team of players from Neah Bay, Silverdale and Marysville to the national title game after winning the Northwest 8-Man League’s 2013 championship.

The team is owned by Ronald Wright, who also plays on the defensive line.

T.J. Greene, former Clallam Bay High School head football coach and defensive coordinator for the 2012 state runner-up Neah Bay 8-Man High School football team, coached the Bay Eagles.

Running back and safety Jed Johnson led the Bay Eagles and was named MVP of the Northwest 8-Man League.

Wright credited Neah Bay for helping the Eagles raise the funds they needed to attend the national championship, though only 11 of 23 players were able to make the trip to face the full-squad Cobras.

The Northwest 8-Man League had three teams this year, but league president Larry Stovall-Moody told the Peninsula Daily News in June that the league should add a few more teams next season.

Wright said the Eagles will return to defend their league championship next year.
