An oppressive Forks defense put down defending 1A state champion Montesano in a 14-12 upset win at Spartan Stadium last Friday night.
After nine straight losses to the Bulldogs, the Spartans put a touchdown on the board in their opening drive to spike a 7-0 lead — and never looked back.
Andrew Armas caught a 70-yard bomb from the arm of quarterback Javier Contreras in the third quarter to put Forks up 14-6.
The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown in the second quarter, but the Spartans blocked the point after try.
With 2:25 left in the final frame, the Bulldogs ended up in the end zone and decided to try for the tie with a two-point conversion.
But the Spartans stopped it, revenge for a failed two-pointer in the third overtime of the previous week’s heartbreaking homecoming loss to Tenino.
Now 1-1 in league play, 2-3 overall, the Spartans travel to Rainier this Friday.
The Mountaineers, 0-3, 1-4, lost to Tenino 56-7 last Friday.
