Under rain and without power, the West End Thunder drag races roared down the Forks Airport runway last weekend.

With morning drizzles Saturday, the races were pushed back to the afternoon and evening.

Then Sunday, just as the sun had dried the track that had been dampened by another round of morning rain, a wiring problem at Bonneville Power Administration’s substation at Sappho cut power to the entire West End.

“It was a tough weekend for racing, but we’re a tough group,” Cary Bourm, president of the West End Thunder said.

Not to be discouraged by a lack of power which cut the races’ lights and made the timing apparatus useless, the crew ran down the street to Jerry’s Rentals Sales and Services and grabbed a high-capacity generator to run the show. A couple smaller generators also were brought in from private homes and the race continued through the afternoon.

The weekend brought 65 cars to race Saturday and 49 Sunday. Crowds of 335 Saturday and 280 Sunday turned out to see the show.

Barry Rawson of Toledo took the Cash Bash Saturday, with Peter Neil, also of Toledo, runner-up. Bob Piggott of Bear Creek claimed the Super pro title Saturday.

Sunday winners were Don Hollum of Forks in the bike class, followed by Dan Tayler.

Rob Henke of Forks claimed Sunday’s Super Pro class with Dave Edwards of Port Angeles second.

Port Angeles’ Nick Umbarger took top spot in the Pro division, followed by Ron Clarke of Forks.

The Street class was topped by Ted Blood and followed by Shawn Rose, both of Grays Harbor.

Tracy Weingard claimed the nostalgia title, followed by Barry Ross, both out of Jefferson County.

Last weekend’s races were the second of the summer season, after the drags ran July 6-7.

Next races at the airport will be Sept. 14-15, with 1/8th mile drags, a show and shine and the NW

Nostalgia Top Eliminator Association.
